A Chatham teenager accused of trying to drown a Black child in a town pond has been sentenced to three years probation.
Fifteen-year-old John Sheeran was also ordered to serve over 700 hours of community service, and faces possible prison time if he's rearrested before turning 21.
Sheeran pleaded guilty in December to charges of attempted murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.
After court, his attorney Kevin Reddington told reporters that his first inclination was to bring the case to a jury- but decided against it because it was too risky.
Sheeran was also ordered to write a letter of apology to the victim at his sentencing yesterday, and to stay away from the victim.
