A human case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in Barnstable.

Town officials announced the positive test yesterday, saying the infection automatically increases the risk of West Nile in Barnstable to high.

Town officials say human cases of West Nile are rare, but people should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

It's recommended that people use mosquito repellent when outside, and to eliminate standing water around the home where mosquitoes can breed.
