Johnson and Johnson is issuing a voluntary recall of several sunscreen products it produces.
The company says samples of the products contain benzene, a known carcinogen. The recall involves Neutrogena and Aveeno sunscreens.
The company says benzene is found naturally in the environment and is usually harmless; it can be absorbed with no adverse effects through inhalation, skin exposure and orally. They say the levels detected in the sunscreens should be harmless.
However, J&J is issuing the recall out of what it is calling an abundance of caution.
Johnson and Johnson says the products are not formulated to contain benzene and is investigating how the chemical got into the products.
The following products are part of the recall:
Neutrogena Beach Defense aerosol
Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport aerosol
Neutrogena Invisible Daily aerosol
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer aerosol
Aveeno Protect and Refresh aerosol
