"The Comings and Goings of Cicadas" With Science Educator Mary Beers

Cape Cod Museum of Natural History

As part of the Gardening for Life Speaker Series, The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster presents "The Comings and Goings of Cicadas" with Mary Beers on Sunday, March 23, 2025 at 1:00pm.

The Gardening for Life Speaker Series honors the Historic Shirley G. Cross Wildflower Garden at the Green Briar Nature Center.

This spring, Barnstable and Plymouth Counties join 12 other states in witnessing the emergence of cicada brood XIV, a rare phenomenon we have not experienced since 2008. Come and learn about periodical and annual cicada species found on Cape Cod, and what to expect when witnessing the “hoard.” Discover cicada life histories, their importance to natural cycles and their actual or perceived impact on our local trees.

Mary Beers came to Sandwich in 1986 to work as an education intern for the Thornton W. Burgess Society while pursuing her biology degree at Bridgewater State University. After college, Mary worked for the Thornton W. Burgess Society as a naturalist and then Director of Education, developing and teaching science programs in public and private schools. She received her master’s in education, and later became the Science Specialist at the Forestdale School in Sandwich. Mary teaches Life, Physical, and Earth and Space Science to students in Grades PreK – 2. Mary is also on the advisory team for the Upper Cape Naturalists Club and a Deacon and Choir Member at First Church Sandwich.
